Members of the West Windsor Residents’ Association have been deeply saddened by the death of Cynthia Endacott, who has been Ward Councillor for Clewer North since 1995. Cynthia made a huge impact on the lives of many people living in West Windsor over many years.
When she and her husband, John, moved to Windsor in 1970, the Laing Estate here on the west side of the town was only 8 years old and people hardly knew one another. A small group of individuals, many of whom still live in the area, could see that a residents’ association would bring people together and help to create a community that took pride in its neighbourhood. So the West Windsor Residents’ Association was born.
Cynthia soon became involved and before long she was elected the chair of the Association. She was a natural. She had enthusiasm, charm and a winning smile. The Association flourished and many of us were actively involved, especially when our children started at Homer School. Cynthia was always there. She became a governor of the School, which was where I first met her in the early 1980’s.
About that time, the Association decided to sponsor independent candidates to stand in the local elections. Cynthia was a natural choice and residents have voted her back in every election since. Why – because she, like her colleagues, stood for the interests of local residents and for that alone. Cynthia was always there – at the end of a phone, ready to talk if you met her on the street or at the shops. Always smiling and pleased to listen.
She was good at being a councillor, too. She understood how the council works and how other service providers work. She knew how to take up residents’ problems and how to get results, if they were available.
The wheel has turned and those young people who came here all those years ago have white hair, like me. Our neighbourhood has been kind to us and is still a nice place to live in. In no small measure this is down to the commitment and constant effort of Cynthia and her colleagues.
We local residents owe Cynthia a considerable debt of gratitude for this and we must thank her husband, John, too, for the constant support that he gave Cynthia, throughout this period. He was the counsellor to the councillor, advising, researching, supporting and, like Cynthia, always there.
We extend our thanks to him for sharing his lovely wife with us, the residents of West Windsor, over all these years .
Cynthia was a star.
